Scrapbooking Idea’s and Solutions - Paper Techniques - Tearing

Tearing is one of Scrapbooking Ideas and Solutions favorite techniques. You can give your scrapbooking pages so much by mastering this technique. It is also a quick and easy way to create borders, back grounds and photo mats.

When you tear paper, you have more control if you tear slowly and towards you with one hand on either side close to the tear. Don’t hold the paper too tightly, or you will leave creases behind - a light grip is best. Practice first by tearing on scrap bits of paper, and when you feel more confident, you can tear that special piece of paper that you are planning to use on your page.

Experiment with different ways of tearing, and you can control the amount of ‘white core’ paper you show. There is no right or wrong way as it is a matter of taste, the choice is yours. A lovely way to finish off the tear is to ink or chalk the edges in a color that will match your page. If you use black you can give it a burnt look.

Scrapbooking Idea/Solution no. 1:
If you have black and white photo’s that are old, or that you want to look old, take some of the white paper that you usually get when you purchase an album and attach your photo onto it. Gently tear the white paper around and close to the photo to create a rough border. Make sure to trim the photo first if it has a white border of its own.

Scrapbooking Idea/Solution no. 2:
Tear a photo in half and then mat both halves separately and tear the same side on the matting. When placing the photo on the page leave about a 1cm gap between the two halves.

Scrapbooking Idea/Solution no. 3:
Tear a whole page in half and then tear another thin piece out of the middle. Stick the two page halves onto your background page and you will have a tear running down the middle of your page with another color showing up underneath. You can also use scrapbooking net to join up the ‘crack.’

Scrapbooking Idea/Solution no. 4:
Try tearing out shapes to embellish your pages with. For instance tear out the shape of a heart or a flower to give it a rough look. You can then tear out a circle with another color for the centre of your flower.

Scrapbooking Idea/Solution no. 5:
To decorate a border of a page, cut a long thin strip of paper and then tear down the one side. These strips look effective placed on the left or right of your scrapbooking page layouts. You can also make two or more layers of these in different colors for more effect.

There are endless ideas, and with practice you will start to come up with a few of your own.
